Marxism #1

Groucho: You know I think you're the most beautiful woman in the world?

Woman: Really?

Groucho: No, but I don't mind lying if it gets me somewhere.

I believe, quite firmly, that Duck Soup is one of the best movies of all time...

A woman who likes the Marx Brothers? I wasn't sure they existed! Really. I'm not generalising... I've just never encountered a woman who found them even remotely funny. I have no idea why this should be.

I once convinced a girl (who I was hoping would soon be my girlfriend) to watch a Marx Brothers film with me. She was very sceptical, but when I realised that she thought The Three Stooges were The Marx Brothers, I simply had to enlighten her. I chose Duck Soup, of course... the funniest of them all. Satire, wit, slapstick, bearable songs (always the weak point of a Marx brothers film) and sheer anarchic fun. Who could possibly not be amused?

Well, she wasn't for a start. She sat stoney-faced throughout the entire film. Even the mirror scene! I always descend into fits of laughter at that bit... the funniest scene in the history of cinema, bar none... and still she sat unmoved and unsmiling.

Needless to say, we weren't too interested in one another after that evening. There are some chasms that are just too wide to cross.
