The news in brief

Spain legalises gay marriage. Yay Spain!

Schoolboy killer ate lobster in New York as parents lay dead. But what colour socks was he wearing? Eh? Tell us! The public has a right to know!

Growth slows as consumer spending grinds to a halt. It's still not sunk in yet, has it?

Won't be long though... Unocal Bid Shows China Needs Oil For Growth.

Vietnam Bird Flu Death Toll Rises. I'm never quite sure how much I'm supposed to be worrying about this.

Bobby Brown Invites Himself Into Your Living Room. But this would worry me a lot.

And finally, am I the only one who thinks "Freedom Tower" is a dreadful name? Too much fortress, not enough beauty.

Yeah, I thought the Freedom Fries thing was good. At the time it seemed to me like such a stoned-3am-decision... "tell you what... *suppressed giggle*... let's rename "French" fries to "Freedom" fries! It'll be fucking hilarious watching the rest of the world wonder if we've lost it completely or not" but between you and me, L, the joke is wearing a bit thin.

Dubya announced that pretty soon we'd all be driving around in "Freedom Cars" powered by "Freedom Fuel" (hydrogen). And his recent speech on Iraq mentioned the word 21 times (including reference to those to hate it).

And now the Freedom Tower. I'm just waiting for Dubya to announce the renaming of prisons as "Freedom Centers".

yeah, the current administration is so Orwellian. They've really become masters of doublespeak. I'm just waiting for the speech on how "War is Peace" and "Slavery is Freedom".
